Managers and Admins can approve or edit the categories assigned to a card at any time.
For Admins
- On your Spenmo dashboard, click ‘Cards’.
- Select the card that you would like to edit.
Under ‘Card Settings’, you will be able to edit the card’s Spending Limit, Default Expense Category, Spending Locks, and Card Colour.
- Under Spending Lock, click ‘Category Lock’.

You will be able to choose from 35 preset categories.
Select all the categories relevant to the card by clicking the checkboxes next to the corresponding category.

Once you have selected all the relevant categories for the card, click ‘Confirm’.

You will be taken back to the card’s Card Settings page. You will be able to review the card’s Categories under ‘Spending Lock’.
Do take note that once Category Locks are set, the card can only be used for transactions under the selected categories.
For Employees
- You can choose to set up Category Locks while requesting for cards. To do so, click ‘Category Lock’.

You will be able to choose from 35 preset categories.
Select all the categories relevant to the card by clicking the checkboxes next to the corresponding category.

Once you have selected all the relevant categories for the card, click ‘Confirm’.
You have now set Category Locks for the requested card.
Do take note that once Category Locks are set, the card can only be used for transactions under the selected categories.

How are the Category Locks defined?
Spenmo determines the category of a merchant based on Merchant Category Codes (MCC) and other factors.
A merchant may also fall under an unexpected category. For example, a purchase of an office chair may appear under “Retail and Ecom shopping” instead of “Office and Office Supplies”. If your card is category locked to "Office and Office Supplies", your card will most likely be declined in this case.
If your card is declined due to this reason, we will notify you via email and give you the option to add the "Retail and Ecom Shopping" category to your card to proceed with your purchase.

Can users select multiple categories for Category Lock?
Yes, users are able to select as many categories as are relevant to the card’s intended transactions.

Can users change the selected categories once set?
Managers and Admins can edit the selected categories at any time.

Will I be informed if a transaction is declined due to the merchant being outside the chosen categories?
Yes, we will notify you via a failed transaction email and include the reason for failure.

Can employees set Category Locks?
Employees can choose to set Category Locks while requesting the card.
